What food should I give my dog?

I got my dog at 6.5 weeks and I started him on blue buffalo Life Protection Formula Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe for Large Breed Puppies. He was fine on it for several weeks but began to have diarrhea. The vet recommended boiled hamburger and rice and gradually put the blue buffalo back in. My dog did fine but once it we were completely back on the blue buffalo the diarrhea started again. Initially I thought it might be a chicken allergy so i went back to hamburger and rice and the diarrhea stopped. I decided to introduce L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets® Sweet Potato & Fish Dry Dog Formula and had the same problem. The vet said that I should try science diet so I did and once I started doing 3/4 dog food and 1/4 hamburger and rice... the diarrhea started again. I'm trying nutro 1/4 and 3/4 hamburger and rice and thats also causing diarrea. what should i do?

I would get the dog completely checked out by the vet again .could be food related but have you thought it could be some thing else . Look into feeding a Raw diet like i do .

Since you know what he *can* eat, I would be tempted to suggest that you make up batches of the hamburger and rice, and freeze some in ziploc bags for later. Your vet can prescribe some plain vitamin/mineral supplements available on www.BalanceIt.com to round out the diet properly. Ask the vet as well for some probiotic paste - they have a better kind that is refrigerated and available through vets. The imbalance in his gut is killing off the 'good' bacteria he needs to help digest it, and unless you keep bolstering the supply of that, he won't have a change to recover. Once you have him stabilized, give him a little time on that, and then explore what Wellness has to offer - they have a big toolbox for people with pets that have digestive issues. Their Simple Solutions and Core lines may be what he needs - but for now, I would leave him on the hamburger and rice, and ask for the vitamins and probiotics. That will let his body simmer down for a while. He needed more time with his mom, and by taking him too early, his digestive tract needs some time to grow. Please don't expose him to any raw meat - it carries dangerous gut germs from which he has no defenses. Neither do you.

Victors is a really great brand! It is sold at feed stores, so I would check for the ones in your area. You can also buy it online. They are the cheapest grain free food I found and I haven't had any issues with it. Here at my store it is $25 dollars for a 40lbs bag of adult food or $36 dollars for a 40lbs bag of puppy food. It also has a it even has a 5 star rating on dogfoodadvisor.com.

My dog has an extremely sensitive stomach. I feed him Iams. Look for bags for sensitive stomaches. He is fine on Iams. If that does not work out feed him Blue or Eukanuba.

Try going grain-free, or feeding a raw food diet.
Geoffrey | May 26, 2013
The Nutro line is generally something that is good for sensitive stomachs, however each dog is going to be different and there may still be some issues. If the regular part of the Nutro Natural Choice line is not working for your dog, I would recommend the Natural Choice Grain Free portion of our line. It is grain free as well as limited ingredient so it basically helps to eliminate anything that could be a problem for sensitive stomachs. In the Grain Free line there are 4 diffeerent formulas: Lamb and potato, turkey and potato, venison and potato, and fish and potato. I would recommend either the turkey or the venison since, from the sounds of it, you haven't tried either of those protein sources just yet. I hope that helps your dog feel better. Amount of dog food for my doggie?

if you have read one of my previous questions, my dog is an american eskimo. She is due anytime now. We just bought a Blue Buffalo Chicken & Brown Rice Formula for Large Breed Puppies and based on questions on Yahoo, there seems to be minimal to no difference... so ... the chart/guide says: 1-3 Months 50-70 Lbs....... 1.5 to 3 cups 3-5 Months 50-70 lbs..... 2.75 to 3.5 cups 5-7 Months: 50-70 lbs.....3-4 cups 7-12 Months: 50-70 lbs.... 3.5 to 4.5 cups It's the lowest weight feeding guide as it's for large breed dogs. Her starting weight is around 11-13 lbs Her weight now is around 10.3-10.6kg (22-24 lbs) Also, what other brands are good? Plz don't give me a website, I checked but don't understand it. From lowest garbage to highest premium DRY dog food Include: Eukanuba, Innova, Nutro (Natural, etc), Pro Plan, Purina, Royal Canin, Science Diet, Wellness, Blue Buffalo... (Include the top types of them. Like CORE, Beneful) I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP! DRY DOG FOOD AVAILABLE AT PETSMART ONLY - as it's the only dog store I go to since Tisol is too expensive...although I've heard there are very good brands. :/

S K | Oct 20, 2012
Apparently the short answer is feed her as much as she wants, but I'm not sure why you're feeding large breed food since American Eskimos aren't a large breed.
nutro.olivia | Oct 22, 2012
You definitely should not be feeding your pregnant dog a large breed dog food. Large breed dog foods typically are formulated with specialized calcium and phosphorus ratios to control growth and prevent rapid growth spurts. This is the opposite of what you want to do for puppies in utero. I would transition to a regular puppy food. This will provide your dog with the necessary nutrients for healthy growth and also healthy brain development. Each brand of dog food is different, but if you look at Natural Choice Puppy as an example, the feeding guidelines suggest: Pregnant Bitches: During pregnancy, offer 50% more than the amount shown for puppies 29 to 52 weeks of age. Lactating Bitches: Offer at least two to three times the amount shown for puppies 29 to 52 weeks of age. That would work out to be 3 to 4 cups of Natural Choice Puppy food per day for her while she is pregnant and 4 to 5 cups once she is lactating. Hope that helps :) Olivia Pet Nutrition Specialist Nutro

She doesn't need a large breed puppy food. You should have gotten a Blue Buffalo Small Breed or just Blue Buffalo Puppy. When I have pregnant dogs.I just put a bowl out filled with food and leave them have as much as they want/need.I use Taste of the Wild or Wellness depending on the dog.

    best dog food!!!

I've been giving this brand of dog food to my small dogs (10-12 pounds each), since the tainted dog food incident a few years ago (it takes them probably 6-8 months to go through 30 pounds). When I got a new puppy (doberman), I thought this would be a little expensive, since he eats a LOT. I looked through PetCo at just about all the different dog foods around this same price (I didn't really look at the ones that were more, since I'm pretty happy with the food). I found that this was the ONLY dog food in this price range that had the first TWO ingredients being meat (or meat by product). In fact, many of the dog foods (the kinds that you find in the grocery store) actually had the FIRST ingredient being filler. In case you don't know, the largest quantity ingredient is listed 1st and so on down to the smallest. He did have diahrea for the first couple of days, but that is because I did not transition him to this food. Sadly, he had moved from one house to... 5/5 S. Donnellan (Colorado Springs, CO USA) - See all my reviews, September 27, 2010

This review is from: Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Dry Food, Chicken and Rice Recipe, 30-Pound Bag (Misc.) Our "puppy" (90lb Rhodesian Ridgeback) has been on Blue Buffalo since she came home with us from the breeder almost a year ago. The Blue Buffalo brand is synonymous for quality in my opinion. We will continue her on Blue Buffalo for her adult and senior years. I have price compared buying from Amazon and the "big-name" pet store and more times than not Amazon has been less expensive. I do have a young child so getting the 30lb bags delivered to my door (FREE with Amazon Prime) has been a real blessing. I highly recommend this product. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 25, 2011

    Shiny puppies!

We started buying this food which was recommended by our vet. When we brought our dog home from the shelter at 4 months old we knew he would be a good size -he's a Weimaraner mix. He transitioned well to this food. He became a shiny, beautiful, happy boy. Eight months later when we adopted another 4 month old puppy (Black Lab this time) as a playmate there was no doubt which dog food he would be getting. The Lab seemed to have had a harder time before being adopted. He was underweight, with his ribs and hip bones showing. He also had quite a case of dandruff. After a couple of weeks eating this food he was putting on weight and became more sleek and healthy.Months later, both dogs are in peak physical condition. Bright eyes, shiny coats, energetic and full of life. This truly is the best dog food I've ever used in all my years as a pet parent./even the poop is betterBuying on Amazon is great, too. It was a hit or miss, some days I tried adding chicken broth, warm water or soft food just to make it appealing and he would sniff and walk a way. I started getting concerned because he was refusing at least 1-2 of his 3 meals a day. I also didn't like the fact the it had corn in it.Finally I decided to switched to Blue Buffalo. He has never missed a meal since and I've had no problems with his stool.Everyone is happy! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , April 3, 2012

    OUTSTANDING quality and value!

I am thoroughly pleased with Blue Buffalo dog food (specifically, the chicken & brown rice recipe for large breed, and large breed senior dogs).I have a 72 pound Black Labrador Retriever (very small for this breed, but still "large") - He is 8 years old, and EVERYONE thinks he's under 4 years of age.. . .. He runs around like a puppy. . .. Full of puppy-like energy and has has the nicest sheen on his coat; he actually looks purple when the sun shines on his fur. All of these great things have happened since switching him from other "premium" dog food brands. At roughly $50.00 a bag, one might be tempted to go with a less expensive brand, but here's my particular take on this - My dog, again at 72 pounds, only goes through 5 bags a year (that's only $250.00 a YEAR!) . . . . Here's why:The conversion rate of this this food is amazing! With cheaper foods (which contain fillers and binders), a lot of stool is produced. Worth every penny

I switched to Blue after the chinese melamine debacle in 2007. After a lot of research, I decided on Blue for two reasons: their ingredient list, and a phone conversation I had with one of their representatives. They were very concerned about the melamine issue, and after I made it clear that I was looking for a company that cared about dogs, I was assured that Blue was what I was looking for. Big deal, right? They all say that. However, three days later I got a call from the president of the company, who explained their manufacturing process, named their suppliers and partners, and pretty much convinced me that yes, this company does indeed have my pets' best interests in mind.My German Shepherd was five years old at the time, and was getting about 3 1/2 cups of Iams large breed a day. An excellent food

I have been feeding Blue Buffalo foods to my Golden Retriever, who is almost 3 years old, since I brought him home as a 7 week old puppy. As a veterinary technician, I am aware of many common health problems in the breed, allergies being one of them. Knowing that corn and other fillers can be the cause of allergies, I wanted a food that only used the best ingredients. I looked into many different brands that were reported to use quality ingredients.
