About this book
On a ravaged Earth, fate and circumstances bring together a disparate group of characters, including a fascist with dreams of a coup, a composer who plays his instrument with his mind, a First Lady who calls all the shots, and the world’s last practicing therapist. And they all must contend with an underclass that is beginning to ask a few too many questions, aided by a man called Loony Luke and his very persuasive pet alien. In classic Philip K. The Other End of the Leash, Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs

Creator: Patricia McConnell, Ph.D., | Pets - 2009-02-19

This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships. From the Hardcover edition.

Publisher: Random House Digital, Inc.

About this book
The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends. After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you’ll understand why much of what appears to be doggy-disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn• How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask.• Why “getting dominance” over your dog is a bad idea.• Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble–and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble.• How dogs and humans share personality types–and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alphawannabees!”In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships. From the Hardcover edition.

    Nice, but one small flaw.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned this. My situation is that I am away from home randomly for a few days at a time. So I wanted a feeder that I could turn on when I leave, and off when I am back. I prefer feeding the cats myself when I am home, more accurate portion sizing and also wet food at times. Either way, once you turn the unit off, it loses all information. Time, feeding times and portion size. I am by no means a newbie to technology and can program even a radio scanner from Radio Shack (that means something if you know what I am talking about), but this feeder is pretty tough to program. So this is my point - every time I turn this feeder back on, I have to reprogram the time, the feeding schedule and the portion size. I guess if I do this often enough, I will learn the programming steps, but it's a huge hassle. I realize that I can program it to run for only so many days, but I sometimes don't make it home on the day I hope to, but the next day etc... 5/5 Michi (Ohio, United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) cheap construction, tricky to program, gets the job done

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:49 MinsI thought I would post a video to show how the feeder works for folks who were curious. It has two motors: one to rotate the scoop that moves food from the main food bin to the food dish, and another to vibrate the food supply, probably to help food bits flow smoothly and prevent jamming. As previous reviewers have said, it's loud when it deposits food... that's due to the vibrating motor. You can set the amount of food that is released each time, by setting how many times the scoop deposits food. In this video, you can see that it was programmed to release two scoops, with each scoop being around 1/4 cup of food.Note that this video does not demonstrate the audio clip recording/playback while feeding. The manual says it plays back the sound clip three times at feeding time.Very cheap construction all around, but it works!UPDATE: So our feeder stopped working after about 6 months. The motor wasn't properly engaging the... 4/5 Eric Whitney (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews, July 4, 2011

    Works great.

My daughter bought the Petmate LeBistro feeder at the pet store for her cat, and the cat defeated it the first day ... learned how to stick his paw up the chute and dispense as much food as he wanted. She was also concerned that the cat might be able to tip the whole feeder over or get the lid off which wasn't that securely attached. So the LeBistro went back to the pet store.I found this AF-100 electronic feeder at Amazon sold by TopSeller100 for the same price my daughter paid for the LeBistro. I ordered it for my cat to see if it would work any better than the LeBistro. My cat has been using for it a month now and it works perfectly. It is larger, heavier and more stable than the LeBistro. My 14 pound cat would not be able to tip it over. The barrel feeding mechanism closes off at the chute and it is not possible for the cat to dispense extra food. The lid has a positive locking latch that will not come off. Today I ordered another AF-100 feeder to give to my daughter... 5/5 old_guy (midwest USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great product, with a few quirks.

After looking around for an auto feeder it seemed like they all had some issue, but this had mostly positive reviews so I figured I'd give it a try. I bought two so each of my cats could have one. Unfortunately one of them did not work upon arrival so I sent it back and had a new one sent within a week. A few things to point out based on other reviewers problems.1. Programming is quite easy if you just follow the instructions, it took me about 2 minutes to have it set up and ready to go.2. If you attach the container and lid on properly your cat will not be able to get into it.3. It will only take a day or two for your cat to realize if it sticks its arm up the food chute it can get a piece or two out but it's probably more of a hassle than your cat will want to deal with after a few tries.4. If you are using normal dry cat food (which is smaller than the 1/2" recommended size on the instructions) the portion control isn't very accurate... 4/5 E. Need smaller portions? Read on.

I read all the negative reviews on this feeder and I compared to all the other feeders on the market right now. Hands down, this is the best value for the money, even with its glitches. I used to own a pet sitting company and I have seen every kind of pet feeder there is. I used to wish for someone to create one like this Petmate Le Bistro feeder. Granted, it does need some additional engineering/design work, but until that happens or someone creates a better feeder in this price range, this one gets five stars. Here is the scoop:The Pros:1)Will feed 4-5 pounds of food!2)Will feed three times a day at the exact time you choose.3)Dispenses the portion you specify.4)LCD display counts meals so you *know* your furry friend has been fed (even if they act like they haven't)5)Food is not "hidden" (like some feeders) so you can see it going down6)Removable bowl for easy cleaning7)Quiet operation that does not "tip off" other animals in... 5/5 Work of Life (Miami, Florida USA) - See all my reviews, December 3, 2008

    OK with several issues,

The Animal Planet Programmable Electronic Pet Feeder, beige revision (not the red and black version), is a reasonably good pet feeder with a few issues that should be addressed with an updated version.Pros:+ Easy, well designed UI. You won't have to break out the book each time you need to make a change. The UI for setting and programming the feeder is a big improvement over the previous generation feeder I had tried from from Pet Bistro (a frustrating effort that could only have been designed by programmers without having ever used it.)+ Seems to be made with decent quality plastics except for the clear plastic food hopper.+ The clock has maintained the time properly for three months and dispenses food at the scheduled times.+ Uses batteries or an AC adapter (not included), but for some reason not both?Cons:!! Incorrect feeding portions. Noticed my cat was looking a little heavier after three months with this... 3/5 Cosa (Issaquah, WA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Animal Planet Programmable Electronic Pet Feeder (Misc.) Designed by idiots

I read all the bad reviews and I decided to buy this anyway. Why? Because all the reviews for competing products are equally bad. Because every feeder requires modifications to work correctly anyway, so I might as well get the cheapest one and modify that. It really does deserve the bad reviews, though. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they're all made in the same Chinese factory, and just rebranded by American companies without even trying to make them function well.I guess the biggest problem is that it's marketed with pictures of cats but is really only appropriate for dogs. The bowl is enormous, the portions are enormous, and make absolutely no sense:1 bar is 2 portions, or a little more than 1/2 cup (this is the smallest meal you can release)2 bars = 3 scoops = 3/4 cup3 bars = 4 scoops = 1 cup4 bars = 5 scoops = 1 1/4 cups5 bars = 7 scoops = 1 3/4 cups6 bars = 8 scoops = 2 cups7 bars = 10 scoops = 2 1/2 cups8... 2/5 Abe (New York, NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
